Greening of the Church
The greening of the church for Christmas is a cherished tradition that involves adorning the sanctuary and surrounding areas with evergreens, symbolizing everlasting life and the hope brought by Christ’s birth. Typically, this includes wreaths, garlands, and Christmas trees made from pine, fir, or cedar branches. These natural decorations are often punctuated with red berries, pine cones, and white candles or lights to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Lessons and Carols
The Lessons and Carols service held after Christmas at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Horseheads, NY offers a reflective and meaningful conclusion to the Christmas season. This worship service combines scripture readings with the singing of traditional carols and hymns, creating a contemplative atmosphere that emphasizes the biblical narrative of Christ’s birth and the hope it brings.
The service typically begins with an opening hymn followed by a of nine lessons, each read by different members of the congregation. Between each scripture, congregation sing carols that correspond to the themes of the readings, enhancing the worship experience with music that is both familiar and inspiring.
Following the final lesson and carol, a prayer and blessing bring the service to a close, The Lessons and Carols service serves as a peaceful and reverent way to revisit the joy of Christmas and carry its message of hope and renewal into the new year.
