Lessons and Carols
The Lessons and Carols service held after Christmas at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Horseheads, NY offers a reflective and meaningful conclusion to the Christmas season. This worship service combines scripture readings with the singing of traditional carols and hymns, creating a contemplative atmosphere that emphasizes the biblical narrative of Christ’s birth and the hope it brings.
The service typically begins with an opening hymn followed by a of nine lessons, each read by different members of the congregation. Between each scripture, congregation sing carols that correspond to the themes of the readings, enhancing the worship experience with music that is both familiar and inspiring.
Following the final lesson and carol, a prayer and blessing bring the service to a close, The Lessons and Carols service serves as a peaceful and reverent way to revisit the joy of Christmas and carry its message of hope and renewal into the new year.

The Third Sunday of Advent
The third candle is Pink, it represents joy at the happy occasion of Christ's birth. It is also known as The Shepherds Candle. In the Bible the Shepherd who visited Jesus first encountered angels. Those angels said to the shepherds "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people." It is this Joy that Christians remember on the third Sunday.

Known as The Bethlehem Candle, the candle lit on the second Sunday of Advent is to remind Christians of the journey Mary and Joseph took to get to Bethlehem from Nazareth. For many Christians, it is an example of trust in God and a demonstration of Faith. It is also known as the peace candle.
